Things to do that don’t involve getting drunk

Do social activities ever feel repetitive? Cocktails compulsory? Are dinner and drinks your to-go? If so, consider salt caving.

I spent my birthday in Asheville, North Carolina this year. It was a “big” one — or at least it ended in a five, so it felt like some kind of punctuation mark. I turned 35 — there, I said it. (Even though saying it doesn’t feel quite right yet.) So, my husband and I booked a hotel, dropped the kids off at the grandparents and drove to the mountains.

We’ve traveled to Asheville a dozen times since we moved to North Carolina ten years ago. It’s a charming mountain town with a large tourist market that supports cool local shops (Horse & Hero), restaurants (Cúrate, Futo Buta), bars (Yacht Club, Sovereign Remedies), breweries (Highland, Wicked Weed), tattoo shops, music venues (Orange Peel), galleries, a community theater, plus the Moog factory and retail store, where my husband and I took turns attempting to play a theremin (very badly). We always have a lot of fun, and we always drink. A lot.

This isn’t an article about the woes of drinking, though alcohol is a literal toxin, and we all know it.* But no! I’m not particularly concerned with that once I’m out having a glass of wine and socially butterflying. For the most part, I just think it’s…
